Cricket Australia XI have won their first game of the 2016-17 Under 17 National Championships, defeating Victoria Metro in Round 4 on the Sunshine Coast.

After a tie against Tasmania and a narrow loss to host state Queensland on days two and three respectively, the CA XI held their nerve in a tense finish, securing a 16-run win.

VIC Metro’s Hugo Ferdinand picked up 4-26 to help dismiss the CA XI for 137, but three wickets apiece to Connor McFadyen, Connor Sully and Joshua Hoffman saw the young side claim the points.

Queensland maintained their unbeaten run to sit two games clear at the top of Pool B, and New South Wales Metro also made it four wins from four matches, sitting two games clear at the top of Pool A.

Queensland skipper and Sunshine Coast product Angus Lovell scored a brilliant century, finishing on 117 to propel his side to a total of 5-303.

In reply, Western Australia could only manage 150, with Nathan Carroll collecting four wickets.

NSW Metro was dismissed for 210 against Northern Territory, but Ryan McElduff (3-6) and Hamish Starr (3-18) combined for six wickets to secure victory by 125 runs.

South Australia secured their first win of the Championships, with Cameron Bullard guiding a successful run chase.

Bullard was unbeaten on 73 as South Australia chased down Tasmania’s 9-218 with five wickets in hand.

ACT/NSW Country picked up their second win, with half-centuries to Blake Nikitaras and Tane Nunn pivotal.

Victoria Country scored 9-214 on the back of another half-century to Patrick Rowe, his third for the tournament, but Nikitaras (69) and Nunn (67) led their side to a seven-wicket win.

The tournament now moves to Brisbane, for the fifth and final round of Pool matches, plus quarter finals, semi-finals and the final – at Allan Border Field on October 6.
